Remembering John Hurt One Year Later

A year ago today, the words “Doctor down” spread across our attendees’ and staffers’ social media. Sir John Hurt, an acclaimed actor in so many worlds of fiction, had ended his battle with cancer.

As with any news we hear, we all raced to check. Surely it was a prank, or someone had gotten a bit of news wrong. Surely memories of him were surfacing all over Twitter because it was just his birthday recently, not because the world had lost him. The confirmation came quickly, and the loss was acute.

The staff of (Re)Gen comes from a broad variety of backgrounds. For many of us, Hurt comes from the world of Harry Potter or Merlin first and foremost; for others, Alien (or even Spaceballs) was our first encounter. Caligula, the Elephant Man, the Storyteller… there are likely as many gateways to his work as their are staff members for the event. Many of our guests, too, remember him from his work — in some cases as a friend and a peer.

But for many — especially the children among our attendees — the War Doctor is his most memorable turn. He played a difficult role in so many ways. In a purely “entertainment business” context, he was a stopgap for a missing actor. To fans with their hearts in the show, he was something very new: a one-shot iteration of a character whose other iterations are carefully documented and numbered and speculated on. And for the show as a whole? He was the final link we’d been missing between the two eras of our favorite piece of television.

Hurt may have only been a part of the Doctor Who televisual universe for a brief time, but his impact has been unmistakable. And the role may only be a drop in the bucket of a massive and genre-spanning career, but it’s meant so much to all of us.

We miss you, Sir John. We wish we’d had the chance to thank you in person for all you do.

CON NEWS: Peter Capaldi Comes to Baltimore!

Are you ready to rock, (Re)Gen? Because we can now officially announce that Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi will be joining us in Baltimore for Year 4!

Peter played the Doctor from the end of 2013 to this past Christmas, but has also appeared as Caecilius in the Tenth Doctor episode “Fires of Pompeii” and as Frobisher in Torchwood: Children of Earth. He’s also an accomplished writer, Academy Award-winning director, musician… and he’s kind of a big Doctor Who fan, we’ve heard! He’ll be joining us Saturday and Sunday — so register now if you haven’t, because tickets are likely to sell out fast!

Also, in case you didn’t catch it on Twitter this morning, Peter’s presence means a slight change to our standard con shirt:

If you’ve already ordered, this is the version you’ll be getting (don’t worry, we’re not that picky!). And if you haven’t … the’re $20 for S-XL sizes and $25 for 2XL-5XL. We will have a few in standard sizes at the con, but if you don’t order in advance, we can’t guarantee we’ll have one in your size — so order early to be sure!

Speaking of extras, you might want to consider VIP tiers to get an extra boost out of the con. VIP 4 will include preferred seating in Main Events, so you can be right up front for all the big panels! You’ll also get our year 4 art print (design coming soon), VIP “Doctor Hoot” shirt featuring the First and Twelfth Doctors, an adorable glow-in-the-dark Cyberman zipper pull, and all other perks from Tiers 1-3! Check them out on our merch page.

Autograph and photo-op pre-orders are also now available for pre-order. Prices are:

Autograph or Solo Photo: $105 ($100 + $5 for credit card processing fee)
Peter Capaldi/Michelle Gomez Group Photo: $168
Three Doctors (Peter D./Colin/Peter C.) Group Photo: $190

Photo ops will be sold by day. Choose Saturday or Sunday for your photo. Closer to time (about a month away from the con, or around when the programming schedule goes up), we’ll notify you of available time slots and ask you for your top three so you can plan your photo op into your con day!

Also, a quick reminder that if a photo op isn’t available to buy online, that doesn’t mean there won’t be pre-orders. We are still awaiting pricing information for some of our guests, and will make an announcement when they are available. Additionally, more group photo-op options will become available once our programming schedule goes live.

So, what are you waiting for? Join us in Baltimore to welcome Peter Capaldi, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Michelle Gomez, and many more for what’s shaping up to be our most amazing year ever!

Big Announcement Delayed; More Announcements Here!

There’s been a collision in the space/time continuum! Our Big Announcement is so big, we’ve become aware that making the event as accessible as possible to every fan will require further meetings with the hotel!

As you know, making things accessible, inclusive, and fair to the fans is what we are all about. We couldn’t abide by an experience that is less than amazing for our attendees. Because of this, we must delay our announcement until 10AM EST this coming Friday! Thank you all for your understanding.

However!

Your patience and excitement have been so awesome, we don’t want to leave you empty-handed. So we do have a few other announcements to launch today, starting with a few last-minute guest additions!

First, Big Finish fans will be happy to know that we’ve invited Lisa Greenwood, the actress behind Flip Jackson, to the event! Flip traveled with the Sixth Doctor… will she have some interesting stories to tell when she meets back up with Colin? We can’t wait to find out!

Also rejoining us are singer Cat Smith, comedian Hannah Harkness, writer and professor Dr. Arnold T. Blumberg, and Dalek master Steve Gostelow! We’re looking forward to having them on panels and in workshops once again.

Finally, we have one more little goodie for you… the design for this year’s standard shirt!

Designed by Ginger Hoesly and printed at Imagination Print and Design, this 80s-reminiscent shirt celebrates our Fifth and Sixth Doctor guests at the event! Con shirts can be purchased by anyone, with our without a VIP membership, and are priced at $20 for S-XL sizes and $25 for 2XL-5XL. If you want a shirt, your best bet is to order it before the event; we will have a very few shirts available at the merch table for sale in common sizes, but ordering in advance will ensure you have as many as you want in the sizes you need!

Head to the registration page to add shirts to your existing registration… and if you haven’t registered yet? Well, we highly recommend it. Because our big announcement is a-comin’!

CON NEWS: More Actors and Writers Join Our 2018 Guest List!

The 2018 guest list has grown again! We’re bringing back some fan favorite guests, and introducing two more Classic actors to the Onezumi Events family!

First, we’re happy to welcome Janet Fielding to the event! Janet played Tegan Jovanka, bridging the regeneration from Tom Baker to Peter Davison, and has also appeared in Big Finish audios and 2013’s Five(ish) Doctors Reboot!

Continuing to round out the Fifth Doctor era, we’re also bringing in Mark Strickson, who appeared as Vislor Turlough! Mark has lent his voice to both Big Finish and DVD audio commentaries, and went on to study zoology and direct and produce wildlife documentaries.

Now, you know we have to bring in some writers… and we’ve got three fan favorites returning!

Dalek writer Rob Shearman is back again, ready to share more stories with the fans. In addition to contributing stories to Doctor Who in many media, he’s also a writer of weird and wonderful horror in worlds of his own.

Author John Peel is also returning! John has contributed to the Target novelization range, and also has several series of his own. Along with Rob, he’s a go-to guy when it comes to talking about the Daleks in Doctor Who fiction.

And finally, Keith R.A. deCandido joins us once more! Keith is a regular writer for many different sci-fi and genre franchises, and once shared anthology space with a young writer named Steven Moffat. Maybe Keith can help us find out whatever happened to him…

They all join our current guest list — Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Michelle Gomez, Rachel Talalay, Sarah Sutton, Carole Ann Ford, and many more — for this year’s event in Baltimore! Register now to join the fun and get the best price for you and your family!

Rock Out with Our 2018 VIP Shirt!

Want a special way to commemorate this year’s (Re)Generation Who, while helping small businesses and indie creators? Grab our latest “Doctor Hoot” shirt!

The limited-edition design harks back to this Christmas’s Twice Upon a Time, reflects the presence of both Hartnell- and Capaldi-era guests at this year’s event, and serves as a reminder that we are (as ever) the con for Whovians of every generation. The faded halftone art was created by con graphic designer Ginger Hoesly, whose work has been featured on BBC America’s Doctor’s Notes and YouTube’s Doctor Who Fan Show.

The shirt is available only as part of our $60 Tier 2 VIP package, which also includes a limited-edition art print (art coming soon), early access to the vendor room, and an invite to our “ReGenerators” party. Other tiers include charms, preferred seating in our Main Events room, and (if you’re extra generous) free standard admission to the con for life!

Check out our prices for VIP and other merch on our Merchandise Page, then head over to our Registration Page to register for the event and add a few goodies onto your membership. If you’re already registered, you can still add extras — instructions are on the Merchandise Page!
