WRITER SPOTLIGHT: Keith DeCandido

RW16W03_Guests-DeCandido

We’re very happy to be welcoming Keith R.A. DeCandido back to (Re)Gen for a third year! Keith writes in a variety of worlds — not only Doctor Who, but also Star Trek, Leverage, Warcraft, and (recently announced) Orphan Black! If you’re not familiar with his work yet, let us introduce you to him… or rather, let’s have him introduce himself!

(Re)Generation Who: Tell us a little bit about your “Doctor Who” related work. Where will fans have read your contributions to the Whoniverse?

Keith DeCandido: I’ve written three Who short stories, and also edited a Who short-story anthology.

For the 1996 anthology Decalog 3: Consequences, I wrote a Fourth Doctor story called “UNITed We Fall,” which had the Doctor encountering the Brigadier in modern New York City for a meeting at the United Nations involving a requisitions hearing and a bomb that will destroy the solar system. Oh, and an assassination attempt at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. (That anthology also had the first-ever Who fiction by some obscure Brit named Steven Moffat. Wonder whatever happened to him……..)

For the 2001 charity anthology Missing Pieces, I did a Fifth Doctor story that took place in Key West, Florida that was a riff on the Robert the Doll legend.

For the 2007 Short Trips anthology Destination Prague, I did a Whovian riff on the Golem of Prague legend, which included both the First Doctor (in historical Prague) and the Fourth Doctor (in a future Prague that had been taken over by aliens).

I also edited the 2008 Short Trips anthology The Quality of Leadership, which included the first-ever Who fiction by Una McCormack, Peter David, and Diane Duane.

In addition, I wrote a piece about heroism and the brilliance of the 50th anniversary special for Tor.com.

(Re)Gen: Of the Doctors you’ve written for, who’s been the easiest to find a voice for? The most challenging?

DeCandido: Honestly, I had no trouble sliding into the voices of each of the three I’ve done. They’re all very distinctive, and it was simplicity itself to capture their vocal mannerisms.

(Re)Gen: Can you tell us a little about your non-“Who” works?

DeCandido: No, because “little” doesn’t really apply. *laughs* I’ve written prose and comics in thirty different licensed universes, ranging from TV shows (Star Trek, Supernatural, Sleepy Hollow, Stargate SG-1, The X-Files, Farscape, etc.) to comic books (prose featuring Spider-Man, Thor, Sif, the Warriors Three, the X-Men, the Hulk, and the Silver Surfer) to games (World of Warcraft, Dungeons & Dragons, StarCraft, Command & Conquer) to movies (Resident Evil, Serenity, Cars, Kung Fu Panda, Aliens, Night of the Living Dead). I’ve also written in several universes of my own creation, including police procedurals in the fictional cities of Cliff’s End and Super City and urban fantasy in the somewhat real cities of New York and Key West.

(Re)Gen: Do you have anything new fans should be on the lookout for?

DeCandido: Always. Brand new in time for the con should be the third book in the “Tales of Asgard” trilogy, Marvel’s Warriors Three: Godhood’s End, which follows up on Marvel’s Thor: Dueling with Giants and Marvel’s Sif: Even Dragons Have Their Endings; as well as the anthology Baker Street Irregulars, a collection of alternate Sherlock Holmes stories, which includes “Identity,” my story of Shirley Holmes and Jack Watson in modern New York City. I’ve also got three new e-novellas out in the Super City Cops series about police in a city filled with superheroes, Avenging Amethyst, Undercover Blues, and Secret Identities.

(Re)Gen: What are you looking forward to doing this year at ReGen?

DeCandido: All of it — ReGen is an incredibly fun convention full of wonderful guests, wonderful fans, and just overall wonderfulness. I’ve been a Who fan since I was eight, and this is the finest Who-related show I’ve been to.

DeCandido will be on board for a whole bunch of this year’s programming, including author spotlights, discussions of the series and its spinoffs, and the Wilderness Years. He and other writers will also be attending this year’s first-ever Coffee with the Creators: a chance for fans and aspiring creators to sit down and chat with many of the writers and creators who make Doctor Who happen behind the scenes.

Register now to be a part of this one-of-a-kind programming, and to meet more writer guests like Andrew Cartmel, Paul Magrs, and George Mann! Our full guest list also includes the Seventh Doctor, Osgood, Jo Grant, and many more!

New Guests and a Cancellation

RW17W03q2_TMolloy

(Re)Generation Who is happy to announce the addition of 2 new guests to the event this year: actor Terry Molloy, who played the Dalek creator ‘Davros” for the Classic era opposite Doctors 5 though 7 and Big Finish, and actor Richard Franklin who played ‘UNIT Captain Mike Yates’ during the Classic seasons and Big Finish. Both actors will be at the event for all three days and will be available for Photo Ops, Autographs, and appear on panels.

We also have the unfortunate news to report that we’ve been notified by Michelle Gomez (‘Missy / The Master’) that due to work commitments she will not be able to attend the event this year. We are evaluating our options and will reach out to all pre-order purchasers of Photo Ops and Autographs soon to give some options on refunds or switching their purchase(s) to other guests.

Here’s some printable cards for gift-giving! Baltimore’s Doctor Who Convention wishes you a Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, and Happy…err…TARDIS…something…

Hiya!

I’ve been getting so many messages over on our new Harry Potter Convention in Baltimore’s page about gifting tickets for the holidays. This gave me the idea to create cards for you all that you can print at home.

I have them here in .DOC and .PDF format. This has two folded 4.25 x 5.5 inch (A2 size) cards per page and works with Avery 3268, 3379, 5315, 8315, and 8317. That’s 2 cards per page and the 3268 template even comes with little envelopes!

I always get great ideas from you all. Thank you so much for registering for the con. I cannot wait for 2017!
