PROGRAMMING SPOTLIGHT: Get Writing with Paul Magrs!

Onezumi Events is preserving its Intervention style in our educational tracks — bringing creatives from your favorite worlds to help you learn and grow as a creator yourself. This year, we’re pleased to be bringing back writer and artist Paul Magrs. And he’s treating us to a two-part writing workshop!

We asked Paul about what he has in store for participants and… well, we can’t give too much away, but we’re jealous! What we can say is this: you’ll be flexing your writing muscles by writing in-universe Doctor Who stories, taking your favorite characters and putting them into new and exciting situations. You’ll also need to do a bit of “homework” between the two panels, but don’t worry — it’s going to be the fun kind!

There is no charge to take part, and registration can be done at the info desk on the fifth floor once the event opens. The two halves of the workshop (and yes, you’ll need to be at both!) will take place Friday at 5 pm and Sunday at 3 pm, both in Panels Room 1. Paul requests that participants bring pencils, loose sheets of paper, and an open mind. And tea.

Excited? So are we! Make sure you’ve registered for the convention in advance so you can hit the ground running Friday and take part in our world-class programming!

In the meantime, fans of Paul’s work can get a free earful of Brenda and Effie thanks to Bafflegab’s new podcast, Grandma Guignol. Subscribe now to start listening, and help drive interest to the series so they can produce Series 2!

“Quantum Hypnosis”: Hypnosis Mythbusting with Nicola Bryant!

Yesterday, we told you about an exciting new piece of programming: Nicola Bryant’s quantum hypnosis self-help session, available for the price of an autograph to a limited number of attendees! But we know you probably have lots of questions about the panel, what it does, and what it’s for. We’ve asked Nicola to help us bust a few hypnosis myths for us, so you know exactly what’s in store this year!

There are many strange things written about hypnotherapy. Indeed when I see it portrayed in movies and TV shows I am often horrified. It is easy to form misconceptions in the world of the stage hypnotherapist. This is not the world of clinical hypnotherapy. This is pure entertainment. The world of clinical hypnotherapy is the road to self-discovery; a well respected practice. So let’s debunk some of these silly myths:

“What if I lose my mind and end up doing something embarrassing I don’t want to do?”

At no point will you lose control of your mind. A hypnotherapist simply makes suggestions. If you don’t agree with them or even if you don’t understand them, your subconscious will automatically reject them. Hypnosis cannot force anyone to do anything they don’t want to do. That includes giving up smoking etc. If your partner has sent you for hypnotherapy to give up smoking and you don’t want to give it up you won’t. You have to want the suggestion the hypnotherapist is making. It may however be something that has held you back, through fear, in your waking life, that you realize you truly want and hypnotherapy can help you unlock your courage and your true desire.

“What if I am hypnotized and I can’t wake up? Isn’t hypnotherapy dangerous?”

Hypnotherapy is very safe. Many people in fact reach states of heightened consciousness during hypnosis. Often people report an increased sense of hearing. If a fire alarm went off you would automatically be able to wake up and leave the building.

“There’s no proof that hypnotherapy works.”

This common myth is easily debunked. Hypnotherapy’s effectiveness has been proven many times. It’s supported by the BMA since the 1800s. American Medical Association and British Psychological Society have officially supported hypnotherapy since the 1950s.There are a huge variety of scientific and medical organizations that have independently endorsed hypnotherapy as a valid and successful form of treatment. (British Medical association, British Psychology Society, American Medical Association, American Psychological Association)

“You need to be a weak minded person to be hypnotised”.

Everyone who chooses to be can be hypnotized. In fact intelligent people are easier to hypnotize because with their increased intelligence there is a naturally more open and enquiring mind.

“Hypnosis is an unnatural state and maybe linked to the dark arts.”

Hypnosis or more accurately, a trance state, is something that humans experience naturally each and everyday, and is perfectly safe. Most people experience ‘Environmental Hypnosis’ while watching at the movies or watching TV, when engrossed in a good book or while driving on the highway. Most people are also in a trance state just before falling asleep every night and waking every morning. Hypnotherapists are not psychics. They do not have ‘special powers’. The power lies in the specific subconscious mind of the client, which contains a vast amount of valuable information and their individual dynamic personal history. The more creative you are and the more you are able to concentrate the more amazing the results may be. It is the access to this ‘subconscious library’ that leads to self-discovery and makes hypnotherapy a transformational process.

“Hypnosis is a miracle cure.”

Hypnosis is a relatively quick method of making real and permanent improvements but there is no such thing as a one-time “Hypno Miracle Cure”!

More about Quantum Hypnosis:

Using my ‘Quantum Hypnosis’ and ‘time travel’ I have seen wonderful transformations but it is always relative. If you break the habits of a lifetime of say 45 years but this takes you 2 or even 5 years is that fast or slow? As many people have said “ You cannot judge another’s journey until you have walked in their shoes.” To that individual the change of direction may still seem ‘miraculous’. It may be a path to somewhere they could not have reached without tapping into the riches of their own subconscious.  However every individual makes progress at his or her own rate. There is no judgement.

When we think of the word quantum, especially those of us sci-fi fans who remember “Quantum Leap” we think of something huge. But Quantum is the Latin word for amount and, in modern understanding, means the smallest possible discrete unit of any physical property, such as energy or matter.

Let us imagine all you are doing is walking from your home to the nearest store. If you are 1 degree out you may end up at a different store. If you are navigating the world you could end up at a different country. If this is your life imagine what difference a small change in direction may have on your life journey. Places you may reach. Places you may sail past and never visit.

For me Quantum Hypnosis can facilitate small changes that have a huge impact on your life journey.

Nicola’s session will take place Saturday morning of the event in the Special Events room from 9-11 am. Admission is $50 — the price of an autograph — and space will be limited.

To register, simply go to our registration page and tick the box under the Special Events heading (just after the photo op pre-purchases). If you’ve already bought your pass, there’s no need to buy a new one — just click “none” under the Pre-Registration heading at the top. Also note that if you attempted to register last night and had technical issues, those issue should now be solved — so please try again!

Big thanks to Nicola for bringing this unique program to our event!

PROGRAMMING: A New Catered Meet ‘n’ Greet, Plus “Quantum Hypnosis” with Nicola Bryant!

Miss the boat on Tea with the Doctor? There’s another chance to rub elbows with many of our actor guests!

This year marks the beginning of our Talking And Relaxing Drinks Including Snacks get-together (see what we did there?), taking place Friday evening of the event. It’s a great way to pre-party, and will feature finger foods, appetizers, and soft drinks. And with many of our guests on hand, it’s a fun chance to meet them before the big programming kicks in!

Spots at the TARDIS get-together are $125 per person. Note that due to contractual obligations and time restraints, we cannot guarantee by name which guests will be at the event.

Additionally, Nicola Bryant will be leading a “quantum hypnosis” guided meditation session. In her own words:

Around 8 years ago now, I qualified as a clinical hypnotherapist at the LCCH. It was a journey I had undertaken out of sheer curiosity. Unlike most of the doctors, dentists and those wanting to go into private practice, I wasn’t looking for any clients. A year or so later a friend of mine was going through a difficult time. They had put on a lot of weight and they were finding it really hard to shift. They wondered if hypnotherapy would help. I offered to help, much to their surprise, as I don’t talk a lot about what I’m up to or what I’m studying; I’m always studying something. The sessions went very well and after just a few weeks we didn’t need to do any more work; they were on the right track. They of course then asked if I could help a friend of theirs, with a different problem… and so on and so on.

After a while I wondered if I could develop a programme of my own, something different that would help on lots of different levels, especially as the clients needs became broader and more complex. Eventually, I developed what I term ‘quantum hypnosis’ using ‘time travel’. I’ve had great results from clients making major life changes and of course, many of these clients had no idea I’d ever been in the TARDIS myself!

So…I wanted to be able to bring this back to the very people who helped me find the ideas in the first place. To give back to the Doctor Who fans.

I only treat a small number of clients on a exclusive basis, as I have many other things going on in my life. But I have devised a way that I could help a group of people, instead of just individuals and I am bringing this to (Re)Generation Who.

The programme is called “Build your own Time Machine And Change Your Life”.

It doesn’t matter what you want to gain from this session. It could be as simple as an improved mood, more confidence, relaxation, a change of career direction. Whatever you would like to work on, you can… And still in confidence. Although this will be a group session nothing of your ‘case’ will be discussed openly unless you bring it up. You will still benefit, if you don’t want to share.

So join me for 90 minutes of exploration and ‘time travel’ and go home with something special, your very own Time Machine!

I want this to be accessible to everyone so I’m only charging the cost of an autograph.

Entry to Nicola’s program will be $50 per person. You’ll also be one of the first to try the program! For those curious about what it entails, we’ll have a post from Nicola herself tomorrow, doing a little hypnosis mythbusting.

Additionally, there’s still space available for Coffee with the Creators. For $45 per person, you can attend a casual catered get-together with the writers and behind-the-scenes creators who make Doctor Who happen!

All of these events are optional add-ons, with our Main Events and regular panel room programming remaining free for all badge-carrying attendees. Admission to our special events goes straight back to the convention and its guests, helping us improve the experience for future years!

To be a part of any of these events, head to the Registration Page and add them on with a click! If you already have a badge, you don’t need to re-register — just choose “none” under the Event Fee heading. We look forward to seeing you there!

PROGRAMMING SPOTLIGHT: Children’s Programming

A message from Eric Hardenbrook, head of Children’s Programming:

I’ve been asked to write something up about Children’s Programming for the convention. This is not an easy task. Why?

Well, now you just sound like one of the kids asking “why” all the time!

In all seriousness, Children’s Programming is where we get together with all the up-and-coming fans and give them the chance to express themselves. We really want to see the creative side come out from the kids that visit us. The creativity, the pure sense of wonder and joy, is a driving force in our program choices. We want all the kids to feel good about what they can make, what they can dream, and the fun they can have while doing it. They are the ones that will carry our family of fandom far, far into the future. This is our method of time travel!

We have had games, snacks, and all sorts of crazy fun in the past. We’ve made our own sonic screwdrivers, put a galaxy in a vial, and attempted to pin a bow tie we created on the Doctor. From a homemade fez to a Play-Doh Dalek, we love to see what the kids come up with. We’ve even had special times when some of our fabulous guests have stopped in to spend time reading a story or just offering up a hug on a teddy bear.

Children’s Programming is all about making our young fans the center of attention. We want everyone to have a great time and create memories that will stay with them until they can share with children of their own. Bring the family, join us, and make something timeless!

More info on Children’s Programming, including specific activities, will be available when our full schedule goes up — very soon!

By the way, did you know that kids under 5 get into the event free? And kids ages 5-12 get in for $20! That rate doesn’t change, regardless of our early bird rates.

And (Re)Gen is also a great first event for families, right near awesome tourist attractions that many of our regular attendees love to visit before or after the event.

Register now, and bring your kids along for family-friendly Doctor Who fun this month!

PROGRAMMING SPOTLIGHT: “We Are (Re)Generation Who”

Saying we do things a little differently at (Re)Generation Who would be an understatement. From changing the guest/attendee dynamic to offering out-of-this-world entertainment courtesy of the Doctor’s most fearsome foe (we mean Davros — don’t tell Missy!), we’re always looking for new ways to make sure you have our ear and we can keep giving you the best experience possible.

One big con tradition we break? We don’t do opening and closing ceremonies. Instead, we do more relaxed, personal panels where you get to talk to us and vice-versa. To that end, (Re)Gen 4 will kick off (as the last three have) with “We Are (Re)Generation Who.”

The one-hour panel is your opportunity to hear from founders Oni Hartstein and James Harknell about the inception of the event, their own personal experiences with the worlds of Doctor Who and conventions, and the Onezumi Events philosophy when it comes to fan events. There’ll also be question time at the end. So whether you want to know something fannish, fun, or organizational, you can chime in!

“We Are (Re)Generation Who” is our very first panel each year, and will be held Friday afternoon. An exact time and location within the con space will be forthcoming; for now, check out our Panel Descriptions page for more info on what’s in store.

Still on the fence about attending (Re)Gen 4? There’s not long left to pre-register, and our main hotel is filling up! Register in advance now (either for the full weekend or a single day), and add VIP tiers and advance purchases to your membership.

And don’t forget to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to keep track of all the goings on before (and during!) the event!
